The Holuhraun eruption lasted from August 31, 2014, till February 27, 2015.

Space habitats tested out in Iceland

17 Sep 2018 Many factors point to the most viable habitats for people on planets other than Earth being in underground caves. Company 4th Planet logistics have now been working on ways to map out and construct caves on the Moon and on Mars. This work has been done in Stefánshellir cave in Hallmundarhraun in Iceland.

NASA to prepare Mars mission in Iceland

14 Oct 2016 The ESA (European Space Agency) has posted a satelite image of Vatnajökull when the Holuhraun eruption had just begun as their weekly image of Earth from space. The Icelandic Parliament yesterday accepted a proposal to look into Iceland signing up for the ESA.

11 Feb 2016 A group of those on the waiting list for suborbital spaceflights with spaceflight company Virgin Galactic regularly meet up on holiday – and one of them is Icelander Gísla Gíslason.

15 Dec 2015 The 2015 Geminid meteor shower was captured by astronomy club Stjörnuskoðunarfélag Seltjarnarness on Sunday night. The video is in real time and as you can see, two meteors pass through the atmosphere every minute during the peak of the meteor shower.

The works refer back to the technological advances of the era, not in the least to science fiction, a genre which was rising to prominence during the same period.
