31 Mar 2023 Some 50 residents in addition to those already have had to leave their homes in Neskaupstaður, were ordered yesterday to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure. Rescue teams went to the houses and informing or assisting people to reach a safe area.

Avalanche risk likely into the weekend

28 Mar 2023 An avalanche fell over a road at the tunnel entrance on the Norðfjörður side of Norðfjörður tunnel yesterday. The tunnel has been closed since yesterday due to the current snow danger. The weather forecast in the area is deteriorating from Wednesday, so we can’t expect the trials of the people of Norðfjörður, Seyðifjörður and Eskifjörður to be over.

28 Mar 2023 The patrol vessel Þór has arrived in Neskaupstaður, but the crew tied up the mooring just before midnight last night. This is confirmed by Ásgeir Erlendsson, the information officer of the Icelandic Coast Guard.

27 Mar 2023 “I woke up to the thunder and then I waited for the click. I knew what was about to happen,” says Karl Jóhann Birgisson, a resident of Hrafnsmýri in Neskaupstaður, after an avalanche hit his house at 7:30 this morning.

Two golden plovers were seen in Eyrarbakki and one in Sandgerði this week.

The harbinger of spring has arrived to "sing away the snow"

26 Mar 2023 The Golden plover has arrived in Iceland, but traditionally the bird is seen as the harbinger of spring and summer. This is confirmed by bird expert Jóhann Óli Hilmarsson at mbl.is, with three golden plovers spotted in Eyrarbakki yesterday and one in Sandgerði.

It is not known whether the avalanche this weekend was caused by human acitivity or not.

Service Centre needed in Tröllaskagi

21 Mar 2023 An avalanche occurred in Brimnesdalur over the weekend and two of the tourists who were caught in the flood were taken to the emergency room. The local police chief does not say whether the flood was caused by human movement or not. More and more people are going to the mountains in the area and there is a need for further services and surveillance.

An Avalanche was discovered in Múlakolla this morning. People should stay away from steep terrain because of the danger of avalanches.

Still a risk of avalanches

17 Mar 2023 Yesterday a warning was issued because of a considerable risk of avalanches in the East Fjorda, in the inland of Eyjafjörður and the outer part of Tröllaskagi peninsula. The weather is better today and the avalanche is less likely to fall by itself, but there are indications that the snowfall is still weak. The Icelandic Met Office’s avalanche watch warns people to be traveling in steep terrain because of the situation.

16 Mar 2023 This is what Iceland and its immediate neighbourhood in the northern hemisphere looked like when one of NASA’s satellites, the US space agency, swung over the country earlier this week.
