All effort is being made to get the snow off the streets in Reykjavík. Some connecting roads and alleys are currently impassable, but the main roads are fine, according to Eidur Fannar Erlendsson, the head of the Reykjavík City’s winter service.

He points out that there has been a lot of snow, so the shoveling takes time. Nine snow plows from the city are working on the major streets of the city and other five are working in separate areas.

Erlendsson says that the most impassable area is in the upper regions and there are some places that have not been cleared yet. He mentions the northern areas of Grafarvogur, Úlfarsárdalur, Grafarholt and the upper part of Árbær. There is also heavy snowfall in Breiðholt.

The snowfall started late last night when cars were stuck on Víkurvegur and Lambhagavegur roads in Grafarvogur. Work was underway to clear them and open them up. The work lasted late into the night until the weather cleared. After that, the machines began to clear the neighborhood and elsewhere in the city.

Erlendsson says he cannot say when he believes the clearing will be done. “At the very least, we are striving to make the streets clear. They may not be as wide as normally, but they are allowing people to drive through. We'll see how the progress will then be with coming rain in the charts,” he says, but rain has been forecast for next Thursday.
