Serious if Torfajökull caldera would erupt

Still quakes in the Katla volcano area

3 Jul An earthquake of 3.1 magnitude hit Mýrdalsjökull glacier just before 23 PM last night. The quake is the larger of the glaciers that have hit the glacier this weekend, but before the weekend a seismic swarm began in the area.

In the eastern part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier is the volcano Katla, which is partially covered by the glacier.

"There may be an eruption tomorrow"

4 Mar 2023 Volcanologist Þorvaldur Þórðarson believes it likely that Askja volcano is at an advanced stage in the process of preparing for an eruption. The events that have taken place in the last few weeks, such as increased seismic activity and the increase in surface water temperature, fit the pattern of the volcano being well advanced in that preparation.

Can't find the thermometers

22 Feb 2023 The thermometers, which were thrown into Lake Askja during a mission by geoscientists with the Coast Guard's TF-SIF last week, are now not found. “They are somewhere under the ice so we are thinking about putting in more meters,” says Ármann Höskuldsson, a volcanologist at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences, who went on an expedition across the lake yesterday aboard a helicopter.

50 years since the eruption in Heimaey

23 Jan 2023 The history of big events is worth remembering, celebrating, and learning from, as much as possible. The volcanic eruption in Heimaey in the Westman Islands, which started half a century ago, on the night of January 23rd in 1973, is such a case. It is still amazing that no harm or loss of life occurred when the cold winter night erupted literally in the outskirts of the town of Westman Islands and one of the biggest sea ports of the country. The islanders set out in the dark of night with fishing boats and made it to safety on the mainland.

The eruption at Meradalir has been losing momentum for the last ten days

19 Aug 2022 The geophysicist Páll Einarsson says that the volcanic eruption in Meradalir has been slowing down considerably in the last ten days. He says it is difficult to know whether this is a slowing phase and the eruption will gain more power soon or if the eruption is permanently losing momentum.
