EU candidate country or not?
The Icelandic people are split almost evenly towards the question whether Iceland should be a candidate country for membership of the European Union according to a new opinion poll.
According to the poll, produced by the polling company MMR for the Icelandic think-tank Andríki, 42.5% do not support continued candidacy while 41.6% disagree. Counting only those who either favour continued EU membership candidacy or not 50.5% reject an EU candidacy status while 49.5% are in favour. The margins of error are 3.3%.
The government of Iceland delivered a letter to the EU last month saying Iceland is no longer a candidate for EU membership and reqesting Brussels to act accordingly.
Most Icelanders, however, reject actual EU membership according to opinion polls. According to the latest one around 50% oppose joining the EU while about a third favours membership.
