The car service arekstur.is was called out 20 times to respond to collisions in Reykjavík and vicinity this morning between the hours of 8 and 9 am, mbl.is reports. The company’s CEO, Kristján Ö. Kristjánsson, calls it the busiest morning in the company’s 15-year history.

Roads are very icy in the capital area, causing drivers major trouble. Since 8 am, arekstur.is has received reports of 30 collisions — twice the number reported all day yesterday.

A total of ten cars collided in four separate accidents on Kringlumýrarbraut road early this morning.

“During the first hour, we were called out 20 times,” Kristján tells mbl.is. “That has never happened before.”

He notes that all the collisions were due to icy roads, and drivers reported their studded tires were of next to no help. At least ten vehicles were wrecked in this morning’s accidents, but luckily, no serious injuries have been reported.

Most of the accidents were reported in Hafnarfjörður, just south of Reykjavík, where roads were particularly icy. Kristján states that when residents there left for work this morning, roads had not yet been salted.

He adds that traffic was unusually heavy this morning, compared with the way it has been in recent weeks. He suspects the reason may be that many people who have been working from home are beginning to commute to the office again.
