Spectacular View for You
If you like heights and staring down a steep slope, you have something to look forward to in 2021. By then, an observation deck will be ready, located at the top of Bolafjall mountain, the West Fjords, and overhanging its steep slopes, offering a spectacular view of Ísafjarðardjúp fjord, mbl.is reports.
Bolafjall mountain is 638-m high, situated by the town of Bolungarvík. A radar station, operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard, is located on the mountain. When the station was constructed, a steep road was built up the mountain. It is only open in the summertime.

Tourists have flocked to Bolafjall, and town authorities have focused on improving safety by building trails there and putting up signs.
“Access to the mountain is easy during the summer,” Jón Páll Hreinsson, mayor of Bolungarvík, stated in an interview with Morgunblaðið a year ago, “and we’re convinced there is demand for it to become more of a destination – not least due to the great view from the mountain over Ísafjarðardjúp and Bolungarvík.”
“It will be a unique experience, going up there and looking over Ísafjarðardjúp,” he added.
Sei Design, in cooperation with Landmótun and Argos, submitted the winning design for the platform. You can view more pictures of it here .
The town has received four bids on the project. The estimated cost is ISK 193 million (USD 1.5 million; EUR 1.4 million). The highest bid amounts to ISK 276 million (USD 2.2 million; EUR 2 million). Construction of the observation deck is expected to be completed by October 15, 2021.
