A candle-light march will take place in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik this evening to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Today is the start of a sixteen-day initiative by the United Nations (UN), running to 10 December – Human Rights Day, “to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world”.

The march begins at 7 pm today by the statue of Ingólfur Arnarson on Arnarhóll hill in central Reykjavik. It will be led by Freyja Haraldsdóttir, spokesperson for Icelandic disability feminist activist group Tabú.

Orange is the colour chosen to highlight the whole campaign – as a symbol for brighter future without violence for women and girls.

Reykjavik’s Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, the Hilton Nordica Reykjavik, the Icelandic Parliament (‘Alþingi’), and other major buildings will be decked out in orange for the occasion.
