"Parachutist" in ocean turns out to be birthday balloon

An emergency call was made last night that a parachutist had fallen into the ocean at Grótta in Reykjavik. Police, ambulances, fire department and a coastguard helicopter were called out.

Pírates to demand figures of reported sexual offences at Westman Islands festival

As soon as Parliament congregates in August, Iceland's Pirate Party will be putting forward an official query on the numer of sexual offences reported at this year's Þjóðhátíð festival in the Westman Islands on the bank holiday weekend.

Over 15 thousand people attended the festival last year and eighteen sexual offences were reported.

Westman Islands festival in uproar as bands pull out of line up

Several big Icelandic bands have threatened to pull out of the popular Þjóðhátið festival in the Westman Islands which takes place on the bank holiday weekend at the end of July. The reason is a controversial statement by the local chief of police on sexual offences at the festival.

Officials from the Reykjavik Metropolitan Police as well as the State Tax Department visited 40 - 50 Airbnb apartments and guesthouses last night in central Reykjavik following tip-offs that the owners did not have permits to rent them out.
