Video: Avalanche in the Westfjords

A large avalanche fell on the road in Hestfjörður last night, causing some delays in traffic through Ísafjarðardjúp in the Westfjords.

The avalanche crossed the road and tore away the guard rail that was there. The avalanche was deepest by two meters and over 50 meters wide when it came across the road, according to Haukur Vagnsson who drove to the avalanche site. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Vagnsson sent an accompanying video message to mbl.is showing the avalanche.

A dozen cars waited on both sides of the flood to make their way. Some waited for an hour or more until the Icelandic Road Administration came from Súðavík to clear the road.
