The notable increase in the diagnosed cases of syphilis in Iceland in 2014 continued for 2015 when 27 people were diagnosed with the sexual disease. 

Twenty-seven people were diagnosed with syphilis in 2015, 24 men and 3 women. Most of those who caught the disease were men through intercourse with other men. One of the women who was diagnosed with syphilis was pregnant and according to the report by the Icelandic Directorate of Health if undiagnosed, syphilis can cause harm to an unborn baby. 

Chlamydia common

In 2015, 1718 people were diagnosed with chlamydia, 60 % of them were women which is similar to recent years. Last year 37 people were diagnosed with ghonorrea with 78 % being men. 

Two people with AIDS

Thirteen individuals were diagnosed with the HIV virus in 2015, 11 men and two women. Out of the thirteen people, two had developed AIDS. Noone died of AIDS in 2015 however. Out of the 13 people diagnosed with HIV, ten were of foreign nationality and three are Icelandic citizens.
