Bank donates €1 million to hospital

An Icelandic bank has donated ISK 150 million (approx. €1 million) to the country’s national hospital. The money will be used to fund new hospital beds.

Icelandic bank Arion handed over the donation in a ceremony this morning at the National University Hospital of Iceland (‘Landspítali’) on Hringbraut in central Reykjavik.

A good number of the hospital’s current beds are very old and in urgent need of replacement. The donation will enable the hospital to buy 400 news beds and mattresses over the next two years, the first of which are expected to arrive in 6-8 weeks’ time.

“We are very grateful to Arion for this splendid donation, which will benefit both patients and hospital staff,” says Landspítali CEO, Páll Matthíasson. “Many of our beds are fifty years old and obsolete.”

Höskuldur J. Ólafsson, CEO of Arion, is quoted as saying: “We want to make our contribution to society and healthcare issues concern us all. […] Now that the bank’s business is going well, we want to pass on the benefits in this way.”

Arion bank posted a profit of ISK 19.3 billion (approx. €135 million) in the first half of 2015.
