The City of Reykjavik has issued a new local land use plan for the plot where Iceland's most famous hot dog stand, Bæjarins Beztu, is situated.

Bæjarins beztu translates as "the city's best" and is a hot dog stand that has been in existence since 1937 in the downtown harbour area. A decade ago The Guardian named Bæjarins bestu the best hot dog stand in Europe and among the celebrities to have eaten there are former US President Bill Clinton and James Hetfield of Metallica.

The area around the hot dog stand, which is actually a shed, is undergoing changes with a new hotel being constructed there between the streets of Tryggvagata and Hafnarstræti. The square where Bæjarins beztu is located will be transformed from a concrete parking lot to an actual square with shops and restaurants.

Managing director of Bæjarins beztu, Baldur Ingi Halldórsson says that the hot dog shed will be moved a couple of metres and that it will be slightly enlarged. "Otherwise we aim to keep it looking pretty much exactly the same." He adds that he's very pleased that the area around Bæjarins beztu will change from "ugly and rundown."
