“Time and again, small Ukrainian children are not allowed to check into flights from Warsaw, because they don’t have passports,” states Helga Vala Helgadóttir, MP for the Social Democratic Alliance, in a message on Facebook, posted last night, mbl.is reports.

She is speaking of Ukrainian refugees trying to check into flights to Iceland. She states that although they have ties to Iceland and a support system here, the babies are not allowed to check in.

“It doesn’t seem to make any difference that their mothers have their birth certificates and [the babies’] names listed in their passports,” the post continues.

Helga Vala states that Icelandic authorities should have fixed this problem last week. She calls for Minister of Justice Jón Gunnarsson, his assistant Brynjar Níelsson, and Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir to step in to help right away.

The post was later updated with the following message:

“Although everyone was called out, the children and their mothers were unfortunately left behind at the airport. They don’t know what lies ahead or whether they’ll have to leave the airport. They have lost all airline tickets and have no idea what to do.”
