Series of strong quakes on Reykjanes Ridge south of Iceland
A second series of earthquakes has been detected on the Reykjanes Ridge, deep south of Iceland. The largest earthquake occurred at 13.53 yesterday, measuring 5.4 in magnitude.
Another one hit at the same minute and measured a magnitude of 5.3. More earthquakes have followed, the largest of them was 5.0.
Following a series of earthquakes last December
This burst of earthquakes is not the first to hit the region in a relatively short period of time. Another series of large earthquakes was reported on mbl.is in December.
The bursts may be a sign of a similar event to the one that has occurred on Reykjanes peninsula in the recent past, according to Ármann Höskuldsson, a professor of volcanology at the University of Iceland who pointed this out in December.
The Bight Transform Fault
The Bight Transform Fault (BTF) a thousand km south of South-Iceland is one of the most important transverse belt formations in the North Atlantic. Its fissure system shows the glide direction of the North American and Eurasian plates.
