Two big quakes on the Reykjanes ridge
Earthquakes are still detected on the North Atlantic Ridge, or the Reykjanes Ridge that leads to the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula. Map/USGS
Two large earthquakes occurred on the Atlantic ridge yesterday. One occurred at 15.40 am and measured a magnitude of five. At twelve pm last night, another one measured a magnitude of 5.2.
The United States Geological Survey classifies earthquakes as a "Earthquakes on the Reykjanes Ridge," which is known as the North Atlantic Ridge, where it comes under the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula.
Both earthquakes measured at a depth of 10 kilometres, but the epicenter was in a similar area to the earthquake that hit Iceland on December 9 and 10, nearly a thousand kilometres south of Iceland.
