Rescue Workers Busy in East Iceland

Vala Hafstað

Rescue workers in East Iceland were busy this morning assisting people whose cars had gotten stuck in Fagridalur valley, between Reyðarfjörður and Egilsstaðir.

“The weather was crazy and the roads were icy,” Davíð Már Bjarnason, media representative for ICE-SAR, tells mbl.is .

The wind even moved parked vehicles, and visibility was next to none. Seven drivers asked for assistance after their vehicles had gotten stuck in snow or landed off the road.

In addition, rescue workers came to the assistance of travelers in a car on Öxi mountain pass, East Iceland, due to limited visibility and tough driving conditions.

In Seyðisfjörður, East Iceland, rescue workers were called out when roofing sheets and other debris went airborne. A boat had broken loose from the dock as well.

Luckily, though, the wind did not send any trampolines flying, ICE-SAR notes.

People are advised to secure their neighborhood and fasten loose items. In Northwest Iceland, heavy rain will accompany the gale. Traveling can be hazardous in the Central Highlands.
