An employee of the Icelandic Coast Guard, who works at one of NATO’s four radar and telecommunication stations in Iceland, operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard, was weather-bound at work in December when severe weather hit the country, mbl.is reports.
Two of NATO’s radar stations are located on mountain tops: one on Bolafjall mountain, near Bolungarvík, the West Fjords; the other one on Gunnnólfsvíkurfjall mountain in Langanes, Northeast Iceland.
According to the Icelandic Coast Guard, it happens occasionally that employees get stuck at work for days, due to weather. That’s just what happened to the employee on Gunnólfsvíkurfjall in December.
And Bolafjall, Northeast Iceland, can be a tough place to work, too. On Sunday morning, last weekend, wind gusts at the top of the mountain reached 70 m/sec.
The radar stations are an important link in NATO’s air defense system, in addition to playing a vital role for air traffic and safety communications.
