Two bodies were discovered on Sólheimasandur beach, South Iceland, yesterday, near the American plane wreck. The bodies are those of Chinese tourists – a man and a woman – in their 20s.

“It appears they died from exposure,” Oddur Árnason, chief superintendent for the South Iceland Police, tells mbl.is .

Police were notified at noon that the body of a woman had been found in Sóheimasandur, near a trail that leads to an American plane wreck, which is a popular tourist attraction in the area. Immediately, police went to the scene and subsequently, search and rescue workers were called out for further search.

At about 2 pm, the body of a man was discovered near the location of the woman’s body. The cause of death won’t be confirmed until an autopsy has been performed.

According to RÚV , there is no indication of foul play.

The South Iceland Police had not received any notice of missing persons in the area in recent days. The bodies are those of Chinese citizens, who were traveling together. The Chinese embassy has been notified.

A car, believed to have been rented by the couple, was found parked in a parking lot by Sólheimasandur. It is known that the same car passed the town Hvolsvöllur, traveling east, at 2:55 pm on Monday, January 13. There was an orange weather alert in effect for South Iceland that day - blowing snow, poor visibility and dangerous travel conditions.

It is not known when the couple arrived in the country.
