Fatal Accident on Reykjanesbraut

A man in his 40s is dead following a collision on Reykjanesbraut road, near the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminum smelter in Straumsvík, Southwest Iceland, last night, mbl.is reports.

A passenger vehicle and a snow plough, coming from opposite directions, collided. The man who died was the driver of the passenger car. The police were notified of the accident at 9:22 pm.

The Capital Area Police Department and the Transportation Accident Investigation Board are investigating the accident.

Friday afternoon, a northbound bus, carrying 49 medical students on their way to a ski trip, rolled over just west of Blönduós.  Three of the passengers were transported by helicopter to hospital in Reykjavík. The rest of them were treated in Blönduós. The accident happened on a very icy road. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Three other buses landed off the road elsewhere in the country on Friday. In those accidents, no injuries were reported.
