"I will continue to do my best"
"The last 72 hours have been some of the toughest in my life as I had to determine the future of WOW air in the face of extremely challenging times," writes WOW CEO Skúli Mogensen in a statement on his Facebook page earlier today.
Mogensen says he believes that he did the right thing in securing the future of WOW air within the Icelandair Group although that was not the original vision he had for the company.
The statement is as follows:
Dear friends,
The last 72 hours have been some of the toughest in my life as I had to determine the future of WOW air in the face of extremely challenging times.
Ultimately I believe we have done the right thing by securing the future of WOW air as a subsidiary of Icelandair Group. Obviously this was not the original plan nor the vision I had for WOW air however given the circumstances this is our best hope to secure the long term future of WOW air, the amazing team that is working here, our passengers and not least the opportunity to build a successful sustainable tourism industry in Iceland.
The WOW air brand will survive as a leading low cost long haul airline operating on our own AOC and with the current team. Icelandair has been a pioneer in Icelandic aviation for 80 years and built a great network and I am convinced that with both brands and our combined experience the two companies can continue to improve and build a strong sustainable global airline that will thrive in the increasingly competitive aviation landscape.
I am incredibly proud of our team and what we have built together in the last seven years. We have repeatedly defeated gravity as we pioneered the long haul low cost segment and competed against some of the largest and best airlines in the world. I am 100% committed to ensuring that the next phase in the WOW saga will succeed and that our team will continue to innovate and bring a great service to our passengers at the best possible price.
Thank you all for your kind words and support. From day one I have been amazed and honored by the reception that we got from our passengers.
