A WOW air jet taking off from Barcelona was forced to turn back on Monday night after one of its engines was serious damaged by bird ingestion.

The aircraft was forced to circle the Spanish city for forty minutes in order to burn off enough fuel to land safely. On-ground inspections revealed that the engine had been badly damaged and repair work is under way.

The airline sent an empty aircraft to Barcelona to bring the stranded passengers to Iceland. The flight landed at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) at 6:30 this morning. IN Barcelona, passengers were able to retrieve their luggage from the stricken jet and were given free food and hotel accommodation.
