Iceland's largest hotel opens

The new Fosshótel Reykjavik at Höfðatorg opens today. The four-star hotel accommodates 650 people and offers plenty of family rooms, friendly service and an excellent breakfast according to hotel manager Jimmy Walster. He adds that the need for a hotel in this price and class category in Reykjavik was great and that the hotel is pretty booked already. A part of the rooms are large family rooms which include a sofa bed as well as a double bed and offer entertainment for children.

The size of the hotel means that it's capable of receiving large groups of people, and the hotel has two meeting rooms on the second floor. It's not, however, marketed as a conference hotel but rather as a family orientated hotel. A restaurant, Haust, seating 210 people is located on the ground floor and offers a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also on the ground floor is Bjórkjallarinn or the beer garden, set to open on Thursday which focuses on beer and gourmet hot dogs.

The first fifteen floors of the sixteen floor building open today and the sixteenth floor is set to open very soon. According to Walster, bookings have been better than they expected. Over 70 percent of rooms are booked in June and 85 percent in July.

"We're really pleased about how the summer is looking and we're excited to be finally taking off after a lot of hard work in the past months."

Mbl.is has been documenting the construction of the new hotel, a documentation which can be seen in the accompanying video.
