Mývatn Winter Festival Opens Friday

The Mývatn Winter Festival opens Friday on Mývatn lake, North Iceland, K100 reports. This is the third time the festival is held, and it will continue through Sunday, March 13. The festival is ideal for families, offering diverse recreation.

Participants compete in numerous non-traditional winter sports, mainly on the frozen Mývatn lake. Competitions include Mývatn Open — Horses on Ice, the Icelandic Sled Dog Club Championship , and the Mývatn Sled, where teams bring a homemade sled to the track.

Instruction will be given in ice fishing, where warm clothing is a must. A cake buffet is planned at Sel-Hótel Mývatn, as well as a party at Gamli Bistro. There will be bowling, ice limbo, horseshoe throwing, and ice golf at Stakhólstjörn pond, where you should bring your ice skates.

Expect a free cross country skiing lesson for the locals. You’ll even be able to learn to climb on a new climbing wall at the Skútustaðahreppur Sports Center. At the Laugar Swimming Pool, music will be on offer. Don’t forget the Icelandic Snowmobile Championship at Krafla on March 12, or the Icelandic Sled Dog Club Championship at Vallholt.

On March 13, a family market is planned at Breiðumýri, Laugar, and a family fun day is scheduled in Vaglaskógur woods.
