More than 40,000 people have expressed interest on Facebook in a Christmas walking tour of Reykjavík, planned for Saturday. Even though all of them were to attend the event, though, there is no reason to worry about large crowds violating the ten-person limit on public gatherings. The reason: the event is online.

The tour company Your Friend in Reykjavík, which specializes in walking tours of Reykjavík, hosts the event.

Valur Heiðar Sævarsson, owner of Your Friend in Reykjavík, will be guiding the tour. He tells Iceland Monitor he plan is to walk through the festive looking streets of Reykjavík, exploring Icelandic Christmas traditions. These include the 13 Yule lads, their mother Grýla, and the ferocious Christmas cat. Traditional Christmas food and beverages will be introduced, in addition to several books.

“With tourism being the way it is right now, we have to adapt,” Valur states. The idea for the event was sparked after reading numerous comments from people lamenting the fact that they couldn’t visit the country, or travel at all, he explains.

He is excited about his first ever online event, during which he will be using all sorts of technical features to enhance the experience.

The Christmas walking tour is free of charge, and there is no need to register. The tour starts at 5 pm Saturday and concludes at 6:30 pm.
