Finnbogastaðaskóli school in Árneshreppur district, the West Fjords, may not be operated this coming school year, Morgunblaðið reports. The school is the only one in the district, located in a remote area in the northeast part of Iceland’s West Fjords. The reason for the uncertainty is that there is only one student left in the school district.

“It’s not quite clear yet whether the school will close,” states Eva Sigurbjörnsdóttir, chairperson of the district council.  “We’re going to look into the matter and evaluate the options.”

When asked to elaborate, she says it is too early to tell what options are available, for the closest school to this one is far away. Two students were enrolled at Finnbogastaðaskóli during the past semester, but now, the situation is different, with only one student left.

“We’d like to keep the school open, but socially speaking, it’s not fair toward the child,” Eva remarks.
