Icelanders shunning Icelandic music on Spotify

Just 5% of music listened to by Icelanders via Spotify is Icelandic, it has emerged.

Icelandic subscribers to the Spotify music, podcast, and video streaming service have in recent years been listening overwhelming to foreign material, up to 95%, it is estimated.

According to General Manager of the Performing Rights Society of Iceland (STEF) Guðrún Björk Bjarnadóttir, 95% of all revenue they receive from Spotify Iceland goes to foreign composers, while just 5% stays in Iceland.

The level has remained around 5% in recent years, but Bjarnadóttir hopes it may be on the rise, with more Icelandic tracks appearing in Icelandic ‘top lists’.
