A British volunteer cleaning up in the Geysir area was set to the task of fishing out coins from the hot springs in the Geysir area in South Iceland. “I told him he could keep the coins that came up from Blesi [hot spring]. For the work he used a landing net, and retrieved 10.000 ISK from the spring,” says Lárus Kjartansson of The Environment Agency of Iceland.

Tourists’ habit of throwing coins in the hot springs had become a nuisance. Signs were put up asking people not to throw their money around so freely, and they seem to be working.
