A combination of high Northern Lights activity and clear skies this evening is expected to make for perfect condition for fans to see the stunning atmospheric phenomenon.

According to the Icelandic Astronomy Web (link in Icelandic), the Earth is currently in the path of a solar wind emanating from a hole in a solar ‘coronal hole’. The matter ‘sprayed’ over the earth by this wind is conducive to generating spectacular Northern Lights for us earthlings on the ground.

The Icelandic Met Office’s Aurora Forecast ranks Northern Lights activity this evening at 6 ‘Very High’, on a scale of 0-9.

With the exception of parts of Northern Iceland and some sections of the South Iceland coast, Iceland is also forecast to be cloud-free this evening.

The IAW suggests that 10pm-midnight could be the ideal time for bathing in some of Iceland’s spectacular Northern Lights.
