This last week, eleven car accidents have occurred in West Iceland. Noone was seriously injured in any of them and eight involved tourists.

This information appeared in a Facebook post by the West Iceland police which describes one vehicle driven by a tourist in the vicinity of Hvalfjörður "skidding all over the place before hitting the crash barrier with a loud bang." Noone was injured as all were wearing seatbelts but the car was a write-off and was removed by a tow truck.

Another tourist lost control of his vehicle in Holtavörðuheiði, the no.1 road leading to North Iceland. The vehicle overturned but noone was injured as they were wearing seatbelts. Yet another tourist lost control of his vehicle on a gravel road in Hvítársíða. The vehicle overturned but the driver and passenger escaped with minor injuries.

The Facebook post concludes that this is the highest ration of tourist related road accfidents until now and that increasingly, tourists are also being stopped for speeding.

Iceland Monitor would like to urge all those driving in Iceland to take care and to read up on all advice on how to drive in Iceland. Often, loose gravel on the side of the road can be dangerous.
