A new magazine on underground Icelandic music in the making
Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir and Kinnat Sóley aim to promote underground Icelandic music abroad.
The main goal of MYRKFÆLNI is the promotion of Icelandic underground labels and musicians that fall into the shadow of the Atlantic, bringing you closer to local musicians.
Iceland might have a small population but the music scene is brimming with talent, with many Icelandic bands gaining widespread success. Despite the support Icelandic musicians receive, it mainly goes to bigger acts and we believe there is a disconnect between the underground Icelandic music scene and the underground scenes throughout the world. To bridge this gap, MYRKFÆLNI will publish a self titled English language magazine focusing on the promotion of the underground Icelandic music scene.
Despite the dominance the web and social media have in the distrubution and promotion of music, printed matter still has an importance in underground music scenes worldwide, such as in the production and distribution of posters, flyers and fan zines. MYRKFÆLNI will first and foremost operate as a printed medium, while also reaching towards the web.
MYRKFÆLNI 1 will be published in the summer of 2017. The issues key feature will be the introduction to Icelandic underground labels, musicians and bands, along with reviews of releases and festivals. Alongside the magazine, MYRKFÆLNI will release an online compilation of new underground releases.
MYRKFÆLNI 1 will be released in 1000 copies. 250 of these will be sent free of charge to our established network of global distributors, spreading MYRKFÆLNI 1 to the underground scene in 50 cities worldwide.
