Families rescued from the highlands

2 Feb 2015 A group of seven people, including two children aged 3 and 9 have just been rescued by search and rescue teams from the north highlands. The group was travelling in three jeeps when one of them broke down and the other two got stuck in heavy snow yesterday. A helicopter tried to fly to the site to rescue the children but had to turn back due to poor visibility.

Driving in certain parts of Iceland today is very precarious.

29 Jan 2015 The Iceland Met Office warns of avalanche risk in the northern part of the West Fjords, the outermost part of Tröllaskagi, north Iceland, and in the East Fjords.

26 Jan 2015 Footage taken by a camera placed in the front pocket of a policeman in Akureyri last night shows exactly how bad the storm was. Police and rescue teams were busy coming to the aid of drivers stuck in a snowstorm last night. Visibility was close to none and drivers were urged to remain in their vehicles and wait for help.

Mysterious cat theft and an incriminating bra

22 Jan 2015 Four cats of the Bengal variety were stolen last night from Nátthagi, south Iceland, which specialises in this expensive breed. The perpetrators left a navy-blue bra and leopard-print leggings at the scene of the crime.

Today it's a good idea to wear your sturdiest footwear and take great care on the streets and pavements.

20 Jan 2015 The recent weather of snow followed by rain followed by ice followed by snow is creating very precarious ground to tread on. Both pedestrians and drivers are urged to take care. The Icelandic road administration reports very icy conditions on most roads in the country.

19 Jan 2015 The Iceland met office has released an interesting satellite image taken by the MODIS satellite yesterday. It shows the Holuhran lava field clearly, as the sole dark spot on an otherwise snow-covered country.

16 Jan 2015 Remember when we published farmer Rebecca Cathrine Kaas Ostenfeldt's video of a snow blizzard at Hólar farm in December? Well,the video of the crazy Icelandic weather went viral and caught the attention of the international media.

The Icelandic flag was drawn at half mast in Súðavík. Fourteen people, including eight children died in the 1995 avalanche.

Fed up of digging their cars out of snow

15 Jan 2015 The inhabitants of Reykjavík have had to dig their cars out of mounds of snow formed by snowplows clearing the streets this winter. The copious amounts of snow this season have resulted in piles of snow obstructing driveways, garages and parking lots.

13 Jan 2015 Buses bound for Borgarnes, Akureyri and to south Iceland are returning to Reykjavík due to heavy snow and unpassable roads. Many roads around the country are unpassable including Brattabrekka, Öxnadalsheiði and Skeiðavegur. Traffic in Reykjavik is heavy due to heavy snow on the roads.

Sleet, ice, snow and bad visibility can pose dangers, especially for those inexperienced at driving in these conditions.

Tourists frequently in car trouble in winter

8 Jan 2015 When the roads are as bad as they've been this last month in Iceland, covered in snow and ice, many tourists renting cars get into trouble. Guide Páll Jónsson who helped four young Australian travellers yesterday to get back onto the road worries about tourists who are not used to driving in these conditions.

Nineteen people were on the coach but noone is in a life-threatening condition.

Several injured in car crash

7 Jan 2015 A serious car crash occurred at around eleven o'clock outside of Borg, Grímsnes, south Iceland when a car and a coach collided. Police and ambulances immediately went to the site of the accident and had to use cutters to get the people out of the car. It is not clear how many are injured but noone is in a life-threatening condition.
