University of Iceland welcomes 1,150 foreign students

Yesterday saw the welcome reception for the 1,150 foreign students who are taking up studies at the University of Iceland this autumn.

Numbers of foreign students at the university are steadily increasing – there were 1,105 last year and 1,069 in 2014, according to Rector of the University Jón Atli Benediktsson.

The University of Iceland has by far the largest number of foreign students of all Icelandic universities. 2016 is also a record year for Reykjavik University, with around 200 foreign students, while numbers at the University of Akureyri have fallen slightly from 85 to 75.

The largest foreign contingent of foreign students at the University of Iceland for the 2016-17 academic year comes from Germany.
