Growing opposition in Iceland for joining the European Union

A growing number of Icelanders are against joining the European Union (EU) according to a new poll conducted by MMR.

According to the poll, 55.5% of Icelanders are against joining the EU, while 24.7% are in favour.

Support for EU membership has declined since the beginning of this year according to MMR, when 36.2% of Icelanders supported EU membership while 47% opposed.

For the past seven years, the majority of Icelandic voters have been against Iceland joining the EU according to opinion polls, or since July 2009, around the time when the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, voted to apply for membership.
