The first of 55 Syrian refugees to be received by Iceland are due to arrive in the country a week tomorrow.

A total of ten families are leaving their refugee camp in Lebanon and resettling in Iceland – four in the northern town of Akureyri, and three each in the Greater Reykjavik municipalities of Hafnarfjörður and Kópavogur.

Two of the three families to be accommodated in Kópavogur will be arriving on Tuesday 19 January, with the others arriving in their new home country subsequently.

Volunteers from Red Cross Iceland are currently busy decorating the flats to be occupied by the new arrivals. Donations from Icelanders are enabling the volunteers to make the flats as homely as possible.
