The Blue Lagoon has reopened after a month of closure due to the earthquakes on the Reykjanes peninsula.

The restaurant Lava and the Lón’s spa have also been reopened. The hotels Silica and Retreat, along with the restaurant Moss, are still closed.

Opening of the Blue Lagoon is subject to certain restrictions, but the lagoon is open to visitors between eleven in the morning and eight in the evening.

Helga Árnadóttir, CEO of Blue Lagoon’s sales, operations and services, says she is really glad to be back in business.

She says she’s heard from both the airlines and the tourism industry that there are examples of people cancelling their Iceland trips because the Blue Lagoon is closed. This doesn’t surprise her, considering that nearly half of all tourists who visit Iceland visit the lagoon.

Open but with restrictions

The opening of the Blue Lagoon on Sunday will be subject to certain restrictions. Employees may be on site from seven in the morning to nine in the evening. The Blue Lagoon is open to visitors between eleven in the morning and eight in the evening.

“The sources we receive are based on the time that other operations and residents in Grindavík go to. According to this plan, we also have time to finish after the day and clean and prepare for opening in the morning.”

Will not interfere with the building of defensive walls

It will only be possible to visit the Blue Lagoon on buses for the first four days and Árnadóttir says that information is being passed on to prospective guests.

Because the construction of the defence walls is still underway with large-scale machinery, visitors will arrive in the Blue Lagoon at the Hotel Silica in the buses. This is to prevent interference with the work area of the defence walls.

Hotels still closed

Árnadóttir says that the employees of the Blue Lagoon have used the day yesterday for a large-scale safety drill. A large part of the employees participated in the drill and it was a success. Some employees played guests in the lagoon and the drill was about evacuating the area in the shortest possible time.

The Blue Lagoon Hotel is still closed and this decision will be reviewed again on December 21. “We work closely with the authorities and always with the safety of guests and staff in mind.”
