Three people were killed when a plane crashed in the east highlands yesterday. Two passengers were on board the aircraft, along with a pilot. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

An extensive search of the aircraft began just before 18.00 yesterday after a message was received from an emergency transmitter in the aircraft. It was later found at 19.01 last night at Sauðahnjúkar between Hornbrynja and Hraungarðar. It has now been confirmed that the aircraft crashed.

This is stated in a report from the East Iceland Police.

The investigation is being handled by the East Iceland Police and the Icelandic Transport Accident Investigation Board in accordance with Icelandic laws. The announcement indicates that the investigation is in its first stages and that no further information on the matter can be provided at this time.

“At 17.01 am today, the Coast Guard’s control center received a message from the emergency locator transmitter of a small Cessna airplane. The air traffic control center was contacted, which confirmed that the plane had been flying over the Eastern part of Iceland and that in addition to the pilot, two passengers were on board,” the Coast Guard announced.

It states that there have been repeated attempts to contact the aircraft without success.

"At seven o'clock this evening, the plane was found crashed at Sauðahnjúkar. A Coast Guard helicopter landed at the scene, but the pilot and passengers of the Cessna were dead by the time they arrived."
