Rescue workers were called out Friday night after a tourist, who was traveling alone, became trapped in a cave on Reynisfjara beach, South Iceland, mbl.is reports.

“I was high tide, and the weather had worsened since he began his trip,” states Davíð Már Bjarnason, media representative for ICE-SAR, The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue.

Davíð states that by the time rescue workers were called out, it was about 7 pm and dark out, and the man had been trapped already for two hours. On top of that, it was raining and quite windy.

“They succeeded in locating him, and soon they contacted him,” Davíð explains. “He was warmly dressed and in a safe place, so they decided to wait for a chance to get to where he was.” That opportunity suddenly presented itself shortly before 10 pm, when a rescue worker was able to reach his location and get him to a safe location. The man was trapped for a total of five hours, but escaped unharmed.

Saturday afternoon, rescue workers in West Iceland were called out to pick up a young man on Langjökull glacier, who was believed to have broken his leg. They transported him in a 4x4 to an ambulance, which was waiting at Húsafell.
