An accident occurred in Stuðlagil canyon, East Iceland, yesterday afternoon. A foreign tourist fell down 15 meters (50 ft) into the canyon and landed in the glacial river Jökla, Morgunblaðið reports.

According to Davíð Már Bjarnason, media representative for ICE-SAR, the Icelandic Search and Rescue Association, the injured person is a woman. The accident was reported by other travelers in the area.

At first, it was unclear what had happened and how serious the accident was. Therefore, police, paramedics, rescue workers and the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter were called out.

Poor phone connection in the area delayed the efforts of first responders to locate the woman. They arrived on the scene 50 minutes after being called out, according to an mbl.is reporter, who was in the area at the time.

The woman was transported to hospital by helicopter. No information is available regarding her condition, but witnesses report her having been conscious the whole time.
