“This is a milestone and absolutely wonderful. It is a miracle that things turned out this well,” states Sif Jóhannesdóttir, the mother of one of three teenagers, who were in a vehicle that landed in the ocean by Hafnarfjörður Harbor, south of Reykjavík, in January. See our report of the accident here. Her son is still in rehabilitation, but was allowed to come home before Easter, mbl.is reports.

The accident occurred three months ago today. Roads were icy that evening. One of the boys managed to get out of the vehicle by himself and swim to shore. Divers rescued the other two, after witnesses had called the emergency line for help. Thirty minutes went by from the time the vehicle landed in the ocean until the boys were brought to shore. The accident was a major shock to the community, for two of the boys remained in intensive care for a long time.

According to RÚV, their treatment involved cooling their bodies down while they were in intensive care. Sif’s son was kept asleep for three weeks.

The boy who made it to shore by himself was discharged from hospital the following day. The second one was discharged in early February, but Sif’s son remained hospitalized until late February. Since then, he has been in rehabilitation at Grensás Rehabilitation Center – work that is still in progress. He was allowed to go home before Easter, but will continue his rehabilitation during the day for months to come.
