No Travel Advised until Wednesday
The Icelandic Met Office has issued and orange weather alert for most of the country today. The only exceptions are areas where a yellow alert has been issued: the capital area, Northeast Iceland, and the eastern part of the country.
In the whole country, there will be poor or no visibility and no travel is advised until Wednesday. Wind gusts by mountains in every part of the country could exceed 40 m/sec. Damage to buildings is possible, due to high winds. Higher sea levels are expected.
In the capital area, a northeast gale or strong gale is expected with blowing snow and poor visibility. Expect poor driving conditions. The yellow alert is in effect from 4 pm today till midnight tomorrow.
In South Iceland and Faxaflói in West Iceland, a northeast gale is expected with wind gusts in excess of 40 m/sec by mountains. Blowing snow is forecast, with poor visibility and no travel conditions. The warning is in effect from 3 or 4 pm today till 1 or 2 am tomorrow. Tomorrow till midnight, the weather alert for these areas is yellow.
For Breiðafjörður in West Iceland, a gale warning is in effect from 2 pm today till midnight tomorrow. Poor visibility is expected and no travel advised.
In the West Fjords, a severe blizzard warning takes effect at noon and is good through midnight tomorrow. No travel advised.
In Northwest Iceland, a strong gale warning is in effect from 2 pm today until midnight tomorrow. No travel advised.
In Northeast Iceland and the eastern coastal areas, a blizzard warning takes effect at 8 pm tonight and is good until midnight tomorrow. Poor visibility is expected and no travel advised. In the East Fjords, road closures are likely.
For Southeast Iceland, a gale warning is in effect from 4 pm today until noon tomorrow. Poor visibility and no travel advised. This will be followed by a gale warning till midnight tomorrow. Expect transportation disturbances.
In the central highlands, a northeast violent storm is expected between 1 pm today and noon tomorrow, to be followed by a gale till midnight tomorrow. No travel advised.
There is a considerable risk of avalanches in the northern part of the West Fjords and on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland.
