Blizzard Forecast and Road Closures Likely

Road conditions and the weather in Iceland could deteriorate rapidly this afternoon, the Icelandic Met Office warns. Travelers are advised to follow the weather forecast closely, as well as information on road conditions.

The Icelandic Met Office has issued an orange weather alert for the West Fjords and South Iceland today. A blizzard warning will be in effect between noon and 3 pm in South Iceland, and in the West Fjords from 5 pm today till 2 pm tomorrow. Poor visibility is expected, along with tough driving conditions and road closures.

A yellow weather alert has been issued for West Iceland, the central highlands and South Iceland.

In the central highlands, a blizzard warning will be in effect from 11 am till midnight. No travel is advised there.

For South Iceland, a gale or severe gale is expected between 3 pm and 8 pm, along with heavy rain. Road closures are expected. No conditions for driving camper vans or other vehicles sensitive to wind.

In West Iceland, a severe gale or blizzard is forecast with wind gusts of up to 30-35 m/sec near mountains. The warning takes effect at noon in Faxaflói and is good through 9 pm, while in Breiðafjörður, it will be in effect from 3 pm till 11:30 pm.
