An innovative way to slow down traffic in the town of Ísafjörður, in the West Fjords of Iceland, has received world-wide attention. The “speed bump,” installed on Hafnarstræti street a couple of years ago, is in fact an optical illusion: a 3D crosswalk.

Approaching it, you might fear severe damage to your vehicle, causing you to step hard on the brake. Once you cross it, though, you realize that the crosswalk has been painted to look like it is popping up from the street. Workers from the company Vegamálun did an impressive job.

The photo above is posted with permission from the local news website bb.is, which was first to report on the crosswalk.
