Icelandair officials have decided not to offer direct flights from Keflavík International Airport to San Francisco and Kansas City, the US, next summer, mbl.is reports. The airline offered direct flights to these cities in the summer of 2018 and 2019.

These routes have not returned the profit expected, the airline reports. The decision was made during the revision of flight routes for the summer of 2020. The goal of revising the schedule, which is done annually, is to improve profitability, and, this time, to minimize risk related to the grounding of Boeing MAX jets, in effect since mid-March.

A permit has been obtained to fly Icelandair’s five Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets to Toulouse, France, this week, where they are to be stored, since Icelandic climate would not be beneficial for them. In addition, Icelandair had purchased one Boeing 737 MAX 9, for which a permit to fly to Toulouse has not yet been granted, Vísir reports.
