Light Is On in Lighthouse
The new lighthouse by Sæbraut in Reykjavík was activated at noon today in the presence of Reykjavík Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson and the board of Faxaflóahafnir sf Associated Icelandic Ports – all of them beaming. Morgunblaðið photographer Hari arrived in time to see the mayor climb to the top of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse, located across from Höfði house and a short distance east of Jón Gunnar Árnason’s sculpture Sun Voyager, replaces one in the tower of the Seamen’s School, the view of which has been blocked in recent years by tall apartment buildings.

The lighthouse will increase safety for marine traffic and make sailing toward Reykjavík Harbor easier. Its location offers an excellent view of the ocean and nearby mountains, and it is expected to become a major tourist attraction.
