Trial has begun in the case of the state court against Khaled Cairo who was sentenced to sixteen years in prison for the brutal murder of Sanita Brauna in west Reykjavik in September 2017. The sentence was appealed by Cairo's lawyer from the Reykjavik district court to the state court on the grounds that he was unfit to stand trial.

Deputy state prosecutor Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson covered the case in his opening speech saying that it had been proven that Cairo had beaten Brauna over the head with more than one bottle, held her in a choke hold and then hit her over the head with a fire extinguisher, causing agony and torture for several minutes.
