Accident and Oil Spill on Ring Road

Ring Road One was closed in both directions around noon today, just east of Reykjavík, following a collision between a truck and a small 4x4. The drivers of both vehicles were transported to hospital. The accident took place near the exit to Hafravatn lake. Traffic was redirected to another road, but long lines formed nonetheless.
An oil spill resulted from the collision, which occurred in a water protection area. The Reykjavík Fire Department is cleaning up the oil spill. Equipment will be sent to the area later today to dig up oil-polluted soil and replace it.
According to information provided by the police at 2 pm, the road should soon open, since investigation at the accident site is over.
