Icelandic search and rescue teams reacted quickly to an unusual emergency call yesterday and saved a stranded horse from drowning.

Members of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) were alerted after a horse was discovered which had fallen into a ditch and got stuck in mud.

Although this is not the type of task usually given to search and rescue teams, it was thought that their specific expertise could be used to save the horse, which was at risk of drowning.

With the help of a digger and other volunteers, the horse was in the end successfully hoisted out of the ditch. At first, the animal seemed to be at death’s door from exhaustion, but after receiving care, it was soon up and running about again.
