The 17-year-old girl who died on Monday night after taking ecstasy has been named as Ingibjörg Melkorka Ásgeirsdóttir from Akranes, Western Iceland.

Icelandic-language media reports that Ásgeirsdóttir took one and a half ecstasy tablets. After taking the drugs, she fell asleep and never woke up. She was pronounced dead on Monday night.

The girl’s relatives have indicated that this was the one and only time that she had taken the drug – enough to take her life. “We hope that this message will spread far and wide, to warn others of the fatal effects that taking drugs can have,” reads a family statement.

Ásgeirsdóttir had expressed the desire to be an organ donor in the event of her death and these wishes have been carried out.
