A 14-year-old boy reacted quickly when his ten-year-old brother was hit by an avalanche in Hveragerði, Southwest Iceland, Saturday afternoon at 2 pm, mbl.is reports.

The boys had been playing near a cliff called Hamarinn, from which a snowbank collapsed. After the ten-year-old was buried in the snow, his brother heard him call for help and was eventually able to locate him. As soon as he did so, he dug the snow off his face and called the Emergency Line 112.

The Hveragerði Rescue Team was called out and came to the boy’s rescue. “Three experienced rescue workers went there straight from their homes, which is important,” states Gísli Páll Pálsson, who heads the rescue team. “That made a major difference. Another three went to get equipment. Then there were eight rescue workers from Hveragerði who arrived and a few others from other areas in South Iceland.”

When rescue workers arrived, the boy was very cold, but conscious. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to a hospital. The boy was not seriously injured.
